Your Site Made Easy

web designWeb DesignWhen visitors get onto your site, for sure, you want to make sure that they will quickly and easily find what they are looking for. if they do not find it fast, chances are they will go on to another site. If your web site is easy to use and understand, these visitors then have a tendency to come back again and again.

Using navigation techniques can greatly improve the usability of your web site. This also means user satisfaction and return rates.

One of the fine points in making a site easy to navigate is to have a consistent menu that is on every page. By having this, users can move from each section and from any other section. This way, they would not have to go back to the home page or menu page every now and then.

Keeping the menu in the same location and style throughout your site will ensure that the visitors will quickly recognize how to navigate your site. If you have a different menu on every page, it is possible that they will get confuse and will not comprehend how to navigate your site.

Web Templates: Replacing Designers?

web designer equipmentWeb Designer EcquipmentI’ve seen articles (and websites) that suggest you can buy a website template and skip the expense of hiring a professional website designer. Recently, I read several testimonials from the very satisfied customers of a website template vendor that mentioned how quickly they were able to get their sites done. The template vendor commented that he/she had known people to complete their websites in around two hours.

With experiences and statements like these, it not surprising that more and more people are attempting to build websites themselves. I think that’s great in a way. For those of us who are concerned about the trends in the web industry and community, it’s great to see more people becoming web oriented and involved.

However, I think there is a misunderstanding by many of these people about what a website template really is – and is not. At this point, I think it only fair that I should mention that I am a professional website designer (the person you supposedly don’t need anymore). I should also mention that this is not my sole motivation for questioning this idea of templates replacing web designers. As a matter of fact, I think website templates are extremely useful. I recommend using them to my clients as a way of getting a great graphical look for their site. What I hope to convey is that template consumers need to know what they are and what they aren’t getting with a template.

Why Dot-Coms Fail - a Webmaster's Perspective

Everyday we hear that another company goes out of business.

dotbombDot BombWhen and why does a dot-com become a dot-bomb?

After checking a few dozen defunct companies, I think the main reasons for dot-com failure are:

  • Poor business plan. In the last years, a lot of investment capital was spent on poorly planned companies that clearly couldn't reach profitability.
  • Poor company promotion. This applies both offline and online. Two newspaper ads and word of mouth are not enough.
  • Poor financial management. Fancy offices, free food, does it ring a bell?
  • Poor Human Resources management. With lots of cash in their hands, many start-up companies hired too many people or, even worse, hired unqualified staff. The hiring of friends and relatives often returned no value on investments.
  • Errors in the company's Web site. Sometimes hundreds of errors could be found in one Web page. Yes, those Web site builders should go back to school, if they ever went to school for HTML at all.

I'll focus my comments on the last reason:

Why HTML Is Better For Web Design

green flashGreen FlashFlash and heavy image websites may look good, they often do. But how effective are they? Not as effective as you may think. Most people think once a website is created it is going to be found by everyone on the internet. They couldn’t be more wrong. This article will talk about why HTML is a key to a website and its success.

HTML is the only language search engines can understand, anything else is like a foreign language. Search engines cannot read flash. They cannot read JavaScript. They cannot read images. That is why you are going to want to find a web designer who is going to be able to create a strong based HTML website.
